I am a new convert to Linux and I am primarily learning by the "trial-and-error method." Now that I have a Linux Operating System mounted onto my hard drive successfully; how can I add on additional programs from CD's on to my computer? I would like a step-by-step process to follow and will add this printed sheet to my "how to" folders for Linux.

Also, depending upon linux distro, you can easily upgrade or install linux software online without doing anything using commands such as "apt-get" or "yum" etc.
