Desparate help needed in squid proxy server
« on: September 14, 2007, 10:21:52 AM »
Hi,
I’m very much new to Linux. I’ve installed squid proxy server on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 2.6 on HP Proliant ML 110. Every thing is working fine except when I open the links from main page or from any page it gives error like:

While trying to retrieve the URL:
http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/login.php?
The following error was encountered:
Unable to determine IP address from host name for www.linuxforums.org
The dnsserver returned
Timeout
This means that:
The cache was not able to resolve the hostname presented in the URL.
Check if the address is correct.
Your cache administrator is root.

Please help me to resolve this problem.

It simply means that your DNS server is not working properly..
To resolve this to a certain level, you can manually set dns server in squid.conf, you have to find it as I do not remember exactly what directive it was .

You can set DNS address in the network configuration as well.

Just login as root in gui--->Open terminal----->neat.

This will open the network configuration screen. Go to DNS tab and add the ip address of DNS servers.
Also cross-check the ip address of gateway as well.
