not able to log in

 i am having redhat enterprise 4 linux install on ibms system , iam able to log in graphics mode or say run level 5 but not able
to log in runlevel 3 or after pressing alt-ctrl-f [1-6] afetr presing alt-ctrl- f1 and giving username password again the prompt
come  for asking user name .
