hi can anybody help first i got my box onto an existing network by what i would call chance i put a combination of many commands and finally was there.can anybody help me know which command i should use
ifconfig >> ip address and netmask??
route>> gateway??
dns>> ??

Man , your title is "ABout DNS" and you asking something in the post which is not cleared even..
What are you trying to do with your linux box , r u setting up a Linux box as the server ie. internet gateway to your LAN ?
PLease clearify.

i intend to use my linux as a server but that is until i know i have it working!! sorry i got u confused but i ment to know if there is a command to inut DNS in the text interface

NOw.. again.. wht do you mean by "input DNS in text interface " . Sorry but I think i m not able to get.. you , do you want to set up your linux box as Caching nameservr for faster internet query result ?

nope am not setting that up but how do i enter DNS servers ip when am in the text interface of my RH 8.0

You have to edit /etc/resolv.conf ,there just enter a new line for each server like..
