Send mail error

Hi....

  I am a beginner in linux environment I am using Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 3 and in which the default sendmail was sendmail-8.12.10-1 which i removed and installed sendmail.8.13.4.In that installation doc after installation it was told that start sendmail automatically by adding: /usr/sbin/sendmail -bd -q30m to the bottom of /etc/rc.d/rc.local.But now sendmail is not coming as a service but its running...and since its necessary for sendmail to be stopped after the change in sendmail configuration files....how can i start and stop sendmail as service.can any one please help me out with this problem
