@mimoh_mi

What I have is /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/iccfg-starcomms and not /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ppp0. Anyway I made a backup of it and edited as your advised but I still have the same problem, 'Chap Authentication Failed - Illegal User and Password'

I want you to know that I really appreciate your follow up on this issue. I am determined to get this problem solved with your help.

Ok, thanks for the comment. I had actaully abandon my
redhat for ubuntu. But for you, I will have to go back for a moment. Promise to solve this problem by weekend.
But, after the last step in my last post, try capitalising the S in starcomms. The problem is from the authentication. You are still using CHAP instead of PAP.
If you have the KDE kppp, try using it I know there is a place that it allow you to choose the authentication type, choose PAP and not PAP/CHAP.

@ mimoh_mi,

Were you able to help me with the dialup problem? When I could not get it working on my Redhat box on my laptop, I decided to install Ubuntu on my Desktop to try out the Ubuntu steps you gave.  I could not even get Ubuntu to recognize my modem. When i ran wvdialconf wvdial.conf, i got the following;

steve@ubuntu:~$ sudo wvdialconf wvdial.conf
Scanning your serial ports for a modem.

ttyS0<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- failed with 2400 baud, next try: 9600 baud
ttyS0<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- failed with 9600 baud, next try: 115200 baud
ttyS0<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- and failed too at 115200, giving up.

Sorry, no modem was detected!  Is it in use by another program?
Did you configure it properly with setserial?

So once again, I am stuck. At least with Redhat am able to communicate with the modem but with ubuntu, no dice.

By the way, I am using a serial cable not USB

Look forward to hearing from you
