Can't install ubuntu-GRUB could not be configured This is a fatal error

i am currently using a WD 160 GB HD fro win xp. I recently got a second SATA Seagate 360 GB HD.
I want to install ubuntu on the seagate HD, where total space is allocated to ubuntu. How should i go about it? Also how should i configure the boot loader, and which boot loader should i trust, the windows one or lilo/grub?

I tried to install Ubuntu 8.x on my second HDD (with WinXP on the primary HDD), but right at the end of the installation process, the installation aborted as it tried to configure the GRUB on the primary HD. It appears Ubuntu doesn't like being installed on the second HDD if the first one has Windows. Will retry installation tonight and post the actual error message.

Continued - Tried reinstalling it again, and got the error message that GRUB could not be configured on HDA0. "This is a fatal error." After displaying this message, it entered the live disk mode.

And what partitioning scheme you choosed during setup of Ubuntu ?
