about certificate creation

we want to know how we are creating digital certifiacte using x.509 format.we are using openssl tool for that but we never know how we connect given user information in gui to this back end created certificate by the openssl tool.Bcoz here we get information from user and our work is to provide certificate to user.
can u please guide us for this.we are acting as certtifiacte authority at college level.
