Connecting USB CDMA modem to Mandrake 9.2
« on: May 06, 2004, 04:12:39 AM »
Pardon the noob post...

Got a compaq laptop running Mandrake 9.2. Plug in the groovy USB cable that attaches to my cellphone and nothing happens. Added any usb sounding packages plus the wvdial stuff and getting no such file or directory when attempting to run it. Need help getting started diagnosing what may be up.

Despite having mandrake running happily on an Imac, a compaq laptop and a dell server, I really don't know what the he11 I'm doing. I'd like to be able to see which of the durn ports the cable is plugged in on but don't know how. Sadly without some detection, I'm a bit lost.

Been googling for about 3 hours now. Any help before I throw this freakin thing out the window would be sincerely appreciated!!

hoping Ricky comes by....

Thanks.

Mostly USB devices are found at /dev/ttyACMx where x = Your usb device NO. You have to be little experimentive abt that..

R you trying to connect YOur phone to surf the net  ? Did you tried that
Configuring CDMA reliance as MODEM
I think you have seen.. Better give it a look again.

to check out what device is connected at which port .. also give this a look
Code: [Select]
cat /proc/pci

Don't see any USB devices

Thanks so much for the reply.

I grabbed usb view to find it on Interface Number 0, Name: acm.

Now I'm in my /dev dir and I see ttyS1 -> tts/1 blinking in my terminal?? What the heck is that?  I don't see any acm stuff except a acm_bios.

I figured what the heck and set wvdailer to have:
Modem=/dev/ttyS1 but now I get "Device or Resource Busy"
Am I shoving the connection out my wireless card or something?

Thanks for any guidance you can provide!

I guess this is progress  :)

right after that last post I saw the usb dir

So dialer now hits the phone fine at
/dev/usb/acm/0 and initiates the call.

I do get a "warning" about inherited section [Modem0] doesn't exist in wvdial.conf
and the connection eventually dies saying (/var/log/messages) that:
ppd2.4.1 started by root
Using interface ppp0
Connect ppp0 --> /dev/usb/acm/0
/etc/hotplug/net.agent: assuming ppp0 is already up
Modem hangup
Connection Terminated.

Do I have to have a drakconnect kinda session set up for the modem before I do this? What other network settings are going to need to be in place for this to work?

Thanks again, and any additional guiaidane would be greatly appreciated!

Yeeeha, mandrake connected to dial up isp through my cell phone!!

I kept getting error code 16 before any login messages. Guess that stupid mode wasn't the problem and removed that line. Shazam, it connected to earthlink with my old Motorola 120 phone. Not at a great speed but usable for email. and shell. I'm now free.....

Thanks Ricky!  :D  :D  :D
