dev/modem doesn't exist
« on: September 30, 2006, 02:01:35 PM »
I need to connect Linux CenOS system to dial up internet using 3com Winmodem. My Wvdial.conf consistes the following info:

[Dialer Defaults]
Phone = 13122213
Username = pmj97862
Password = 89462334

When I run wvdial command it says that the modem/dev doesn't exist. On running the lspci it shows the follwoing apart from other things:
02:0a.0 Communication controller: 3Com Corp, Modem Division WinModem

which I think means that the modem has been detected. Kindly let me know how I may fix the problem.

Thank you,

Adnan

First of all you have to tell us that what exact model of modem you have then look it in linux compatible hardware list.

Also you can see this link giving more information about winmodems on linux.
pcquest.com/content/linux/handson/102082101.asp

If that doesn't help then see following else your modem is not supported in linux so far..
