Modem sharing over a LAN to connect to the internet
« on: July 12, 2004, 09:32:29 PM »
OK I need some help here. I am new to linux, well at least to networking linux. Switched to linux about 3 years ago. I am trying to connect my two computer together and share a internet connection. I have a NIC card in each computer and a modem attached to one. I tried to use the mandrake control center to configure the internet sharing. It is using squid for the proxy and shorewall for the the firewall (I assume). I have tried both DHCP and static IP addresses. In static mode I can ping the computers and I can get squid to run. But when I go on the remote machine I get URL access denied by squid. I have spent about 20 hours trying to figure this out and keep ending up at the same point. I know I am missing something just not sure what it is.

You are getting above message as your ACLs for squid are not configured properly.
Well for two machine static IP will be fine.

Lastly I wanna say do look at Squid Proxy and compare your squid.conf with it.. You will probably find the problem yourself..

Anyway you can also have simple NAT internet Sharing. you and can do that simply by intalling Firestarter etc..
or goto Linux How to section and see  Internet Sharing Linux
